Follow these guidelines for greatest impact
Friendraisers leverage the reputation and regard of current board members and volunteers to raise awareness about an organization among new audiences.
This method is particularly powerful during times when philanthropic giving is down because, as research shows, people are willing to consider a new charity if they are introduced to it by someone they respect and value.
Many organizations are turning to friendraisers because they:
|
- offer a low-risk, low-cost method for engaging new supporters;
- allow the organization to target specific groups, such as women, professionals, or residents of specific towns; and
- work well in a variety of venues and formats, including breakfasts, lunches, and evening cocktail hours that can be held at an individual’s home, office, or place of worship.
Friendraisers are easily adapted to fit the needs of the organization—that’s one of their strengths—but, in general, the following guidelines will apply.
Identify a Host. This individual must be willing to offer physical space for the event, as well as invite his or her friends, neighbors, or colleagues.
Make it Easy on the Host. Regardless of the venue, the organization should arrange the details. This includes developing, printing, and mailing invitations to the host’s list of guests; although, ideally the host will be willing to personalize the invitations. The organization should be the party that provides the refreshments. It is also recommended that the organization make staff available to the host throughout the process.
Define the Purpose Clearly. Invitations should explain that the event is a friendraiser and not a fundraiser. At the event, don’t make requests for money. It is important not to mislead guests.
Plan for Refreshments, a Presentation, and Introductions. The evening typically begins with informal drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Guests should be encouraged to mingle. Later, they should be called together for an informal presentation, followed by a question and answer session. Key agency staff should be available for introductions and to answer any questions about the agency. It’s also recommended that guests be invited to sign up to receive the agency’s newsletter or tour the organization.
Provide a Takeaway. A gift bag is usually distributed to attendees at the end of the event. The bag should contain literature about the organization and other branded items, such as a pen or notepad. Also provide a note that thanks each individual for attending the event.
