Supporting the Census: Six Simple Ideas

Supporting the 2010 census need not require significant funds. There are many simple, yet highly meaningful activities members of the Alliance and UNCA can engage in:

  1. Contact Local Census Office. Local census offices are looking to engage nonprofits. Ask to speak to a partnership specialist for a short conversation about simple ways to participate.

  2. Become a Census Partner. It doesn’t commit the organization to anything, but it does mean that the agency will have access to a census partnership specialist who can help the organization best utilize census resources and materials.

  3. Educate Staff. Make staff aware of what’s at stake so that they are equipped with knowledge to answer clients’ questions.

  4. Learn From Peers. Many Alliance and UNCA members are involved in supporting 2010 census efforts. Learn what several members are planning.

  5. Integrate Into Existing Activities. Provide information in the agency’s newsletter, provide forms and instructions at the front desk, or briefly discuss the census during the intake process.

  6. Donate Space. Host a census information session so that census workers can come in to answer staff and client questions.

Use the federal governments 2010 census website to find contact information for local census offices. The organization Nonprofits Count offers a participation toolkit, fact sheets, downloadable webinars, and other resources designed specifically for nonprofits.
