Devonta was 16 on the morning of Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, when hundreds of thousands of Detroit Free Press newspapers containing his picture rolled off the printing press.
He was the oldest boy living at Alliance for Children and Families member Christ Child House, Detroit.
He had also been in the program the longest. Soon he would turn 17 and “age out” of Christ Child House, the only home and family he had known for the majority of his life. State rules would require him to move on to a foster home or be placed in independent living.
At least that is the path his life likely would have taken if not for Christ Child House’s bold decision to throw open its doors and grant the Detroit Free Press an unprecedented 37 months of access to daily life at the treatment center. Continue reading.
