More than 155 members of the United Neighborhood Centers of America (UNCA) and Alliance for Children and Families gathered at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C., Dec. 8-10, 2008, to discuss change, exercise their collective voice, and improve their professional advocacy skills.
UNCA’s 2008 National Policy Summit focused on the theme “Partnerships: Building Opportunities for Change.” Attendees had the opportunity to network with peers and participate in a variety of workshops covering 15 themes, including nonprofit management, the federal budget and youth programs, workforce challenges, and citizenship.
Featured speaker Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of Policy Link, a national research and action institute for economic and social equity, offered her perspective about how research can be used to understand and demonstrate possibilities for positive change.

A variety of awards were also presented during the summit, including UNCA’s highest award, the Jane Addams Distinguished Leadership Award. For 2008, the award was presented to Dolores Huerta, president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. The Jane Addams Distinguished Leadership Award is presented to individuals who demonstrate a steadfast dedication to improving the quality of life for individuals and families by modeling strong leadership in influencing and developing programs, services, and public policies.
Alumni of the Year Awards were presented to recognize individuals who are highly involved in the work of UNCA members. Winners include Carrie Day Aspinwall, president and CEO of CDA Enterprises; Karen Brooks, social worker supervisor for Bronx Head Start Center; Joyce Beatty, member of the Ohio House of Representatives and minority house leader; and Matt Habash, executive director of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
