The institutes are designed to help Alliance and United Neighborhood Centers of America (UNCA) members stimulate community activism and strengthen the authentic voices of disenfranchised constituencies. Participants learn strategies for infusing civic engagement practices into programs and services.
More specifically, attendees learn specific skills required to increase staff and volunteer involvement in civic engagement efforts. Participants also explore pathways to developing organizational capacity to carry out civic engagement activities. Since the first institute in the fall of 2007, the Civic Engagement Training Institutes have produced around 80 graduates from Alliance and UNCA member organizations.
With the skills developed during the training, participants return home with knowledge about how to affect change in their communities and organizations. Thereby, the likelihood of success when implementing initiatives at their organization is increased and participants are better equipped to discuss how to promote participation, leadership, and influencing change with their organization’s board of directors, funders, and policymakers.
